Late October - itinerary help

My boyfriend and I have a 10 day break in New England from 15 - 25 October. Our original plan was to stay in Boston 2 nights, then drive up to the White Mountains in New Hampshire for 3 nights, then across to Bar Harbor and down the coast of Maine back to Boston. However, friends have said that we should definitely go to Vermont if we can fit it in as it's so beautiful. But would we be too late to see any fall foliage at this time (it would be 17-18 October)? Should we try and go to both Vermont and White Mountains or just stick to New Hampshire? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Rach2434 in London...

You should see colour in mid to lower Vermont during your proposed trip. The North East Kingdom in VT will have peaked so aim for mid Vermont and Woodstock! To give you an idea of driving time it takes 2.5 hours to get from Mount Washington NH to Woodstock and about 6 hours from Bar Harbour ME as there is no fast route, but hurrying is not what you want to do! Boston to Woodstock is an easy 2.5 hour drive.

I'd suggest Boston - Woodstock - White Mountains (Jackson)- Bar Harbour then back to Boston. If you spend at least 2 nights in each place you will be able to do a drive tours during the day and it's approx 2 hours to the south of the State from Woodstock or 2 hours north to Burlington. You would be better taking route 100 south as you should see better colour. As long as you don't mind a scenic drive a few short walk you should find lower valleys where the colour will blow you away. If you come later than Oct 17-18 aim for the southern part of the State, however you may still see some colour in the north as it doesn't finish overnight.

So far as lodging goes there is still some choice if you do decide to stay in Woodstock over 16/17 October but if you are flexible bay a day either way it may give you more choice. Check out www.woodstockvt.com the village web site.

In the village you can see what is often quoted as being one of the 5 prettiest towns in the US (think the Cotswolds without the tea shops and tourist buses) as well as the Rockefeller Marsh Billings estate and Mount Tom a National Park. All walkable from the village centre.

If mother nature plays ball it should be a glorious fall as we've had an English summer...very wet but unlike the UK...often warm. Thus the trees are green, the rivers have water and the first night frosts hit up north about three nights ago...so all is lined up for an October kick off....

If you drive on route 4 check out Scotland by the Yard...yup a genuine Scottish shop in VT...as Quechee has a Highland games every year!

Come hungry and prepare to eat wonderful lobster in Maine at a third of the price Sainsbury's sells it for!
