Planning a fall foliage trip to New England

We are planning a fall foliage trip to New England and need help with itinerary and places to stay. We are thinking of starting in Burlington, Vermont, then making our way to New Hampshire and Maine. We are not sure how much time to allow for travel each day and where to stay and how long in each place. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

How much time overall are you thinking of spending in the vt/nh/me area? This will help determine how to allocate time in different spots.

Thanks for replying.

We will probably have a week. We could possibly have 10 days if needed.

Do a search or 2 (in the field just about your post) for 'fall foliage trip' or other catchy phrases like that and you'll find lots of good info. The past posts are generally still applicable re: the various towns, itineraries, etc.. Here's a link to get you started:

Burlington and Stowe are 2 of my favs. Depends on what you like to do.... shop, sightsee, hit art galleries, hike, etc... Where to go for best color also depends on when you go... the higher elevations turn earlier than the valleys.

We spent 8 days touring Vermont, NH, and Maine the first week of October last year. It is good that you are planning now. We found great airfare and car rental rates in March. We enjoyed the area around Burlington, then hit North Conway, NH. We drove the Kanc, went up Mt. Washington and up to Jackson, We then went to Bar Harbor and Acadia NP then down the coast of Maine to Camden, Rockland, Portland, Kennebunkport and Ogunquit. We flew in and out of Manchester, NH. We really enjoyed our trip. Good luck with your trip planning.

Hi Etouffe,

Do consider Woodstock VT (www.woodstockvt.com) as it is a 'must see' if you do visit Vermont. Often quoted as being on of the 5 prettiest villages in all of the US.

CeCe - That sounds like a superb itinerary! I might omit N. Conway, and substitute a night in the White Mountains... of another night in Acadia.

Thanks. We really enjoyed our trip last October and want to come back maybe next year. Going to Glacier NP and Yellowstone NP this year.

(FYI- We used North Conway as our base for White Mts.)

If all you helpful folks are still there... I have another question.... We booked our travel Sept 24 - Oct 2nd. After reading more about fall foliage trip timing, we're now considering changing to a week later say Oct 1st - 9th. We're planning to spend most time in New Hampshire and Vermont. Any recommendaitons on which week we're more likely to have best colors?

Thanks
