HELP...Looking For Camping In Vermont With Great hiking...

My girl friends and I are doing our first road trip. We are leaving from Toronto--> Montreal--> PEI--> Halifax and then we want to camp two nights in Vermont. I have done some initial searching and ideally we would like to find a place in North East or North Western Vermont.

We are looking for a camp ground with tent sites or rental cabins that is near water but also has amazing hiking trails and look outs.... does anyone know of some good camp grounds or state parks?

thanks jcamer01

Try Ricker Pond State Park. It's not far from Owl's Head Mountain (www.trails.com/tcatalog_trail.aspx…) & has everything else you're looking for:

Stillwater state park, Groton Vt. It;s on Groton pond, there is Boulder beach across the pond. Stayed here last year and it was great. Plenty of hiking in Groton State forest. Go to Vermont State park website.

Branbury State Park near Middlebury meets your requirements as well. Sounds like fun!

2 of the best IMHO are the vicinities of Lake Willoughby in NE Vermont, and Underhill state park in NW VT.

Lake Willoughby is VERY pretty, with 2 moderate-sized mountains at the southern end. The lake is great for swimming and the views of and from the mountains are superb. There's a campground just north of the lake - perhaps 1/2 mile away.

Underhill state park is at the foot of Mt. Mansfield - the highest mountain in the state (~4300 ft.). There's a small stream adjacent to the park for cooling off (small, but cool). There are dozens of trails on Mt. Mansfield ranging from low/moderate to strenuous. The western views from ~1/2 way up are the best in the state IMO. Hiking from the park to the summit ridge is about 4-5 hours' round trip (hiking time, not incl stops).
