Driving Appalachian trail

Hi

We are coming from Australia in Sept & Oct 2010 & want to drive some of the Appalachian trail. Can someone please advise the best parts to drive. We will have about 8 days we can use for this part of our trip.

thanks

The Appalachian Trail is a hiking trail that runs from Maine to Georgia (through Vermont). Perhaps you meant something else?

Echoing the above poster, you cannot drive the Appalacian Trail. It's a hiking trail through the mountains.

There is a sign on rt 11/30 coming out of Manchester just before the road splits at Bromley that says you are crossing the AT. That may have to do. It would be about 30 feet of it.

Hi

Thanks very much for the information. Sorry my message was a bit misleading. I know the Appalachian trail is a walking trail, but also thought you could drive near it & see some great scenery. We found the site below which lists driving routes that parallel some of the trail, so will have a look at this.

You can certainly look on a map to see where the AT goes, and visit those areas but you will not see the same views that hikers see. The only way to experience the AT is to hike it. You can't drive into the woods to see the lovely woods and meadows, valleys, views and peaks that are available to those persistent and hearty hikers. For drivers, the closest you can do is to get out of your car with a good pair of boots and and a map and hike bits of the trail. In VT, the Long Trail runs through the entire state and for much of it, starting in the south, the AT shares the trail,; then the AT heads into NH while the LT keeps going due north. There are lots and lots of day hikes available all over northern New England. Just stop in any outdoors equipment store and they can advise you.

There are of course many very scenic drives throughout New England. Rts 112 and 302 in New Hampshire, and I-89, Rt. 100 & Rt 108 in Vermont are excellent.

A simple answer to your question, (which I understood), The AT roughly parallels US Route 7 from mid Massachusetts to Route 4 in Vermont.(approx). In Vermont look for access signs on Route 7 for the AT, Long trail or Green Mountain National Forest. Stop in the forest service station on Route 30 in Manchester VT or look online at the web site for the Green Mountain National Forest.and look at their maps. In the past I HAVE driven the AT by accessing small sections of the trail from road heads mostly accessible from RT7.

If you want to take a beautiful drive in Vermont, drive route 100 from Quebec to Mass. Take at least 3 days to do it. Beautiful.
