North Conway or Stowe

Still planning but narrowing it down now. Once we leave the coast I need help with whether we should head to North Conway and stay there 2 nights, ( i like the idea of the train ride) or go straight to Stowe and have extra time in Stowe. Also not sure if I should have 3 nights in Stowe and 1 in Woodstock VT or 2 in each. Any help would be good. Thanks.

Morning NanpWiltshire,

Stowe gets my vote...North Conway is over developed, sure it has beautiful scenery around it but I think you'd enjoy Stowe and northern Vermont more vivid holiday memories...You could of course consider staying in Jackson north of North Conway which has a much smaller personal feel to it.....

When we speak of NC, it really is a euphemism for the Mount Washington region and Jackson is probably the crown jewel. Glad to see that David did not totally diss NC as it like asking a painter if you should buy his paintings or the artist next door.

Both are great places to visit. Mansfield is the tallest mountain in Vt and MW is the tallest in NE. Both have charming areas, restaurants, vistas, hiking, swimming, waterfalls. Of all the things to narrow your choices don't base it on the train ride. I think you will be disappointed unless you are a train buff.

Your holiday memories will be just as vivid whether you visit one, both or neither.

Just for kicks here is my small list of things to do in the MW area.

Well, I have to say that it is a mistake to miss the Mt Washington Valley but that's why I am the DE.

If it helps, I have a number of pics here on TA

Go straight to Stowe IMHO. Do a drive-thru of the White Mtns..... beautiful indeed, but doable as a drive-by with a few brief stops. Makes a nice day's drive.

Please don't discount North Conway and the Mount Washington Valley out of your trip. We have been to both Stowe and North Conway and we love the North Conway area. Yes, as pointed out, North Conway is a busy little area, but there are lots of things to do You pointed out the train ride which is a nice way to spend a few hours. There is also the Mount Washington auto road (drive yourself, or take the stage up) a fabulous scenic vista if the weather allows. There is also the Cog Railway to the summit.

The Kancamaugus Highway is one of America's scenic vistas and is not to be missed either. There are plenty of little areas to pull off and have a picnic, enjoy the views.

There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, the village of North Conway itself has charming little stores, like the old 5 and Dime store, and Zeb's.

At least consider a night or two! You won't be sorry!

If we're really talking about NC, and not the general Mt. Washington region of the white mtns, then I'd pick Stowe hands down.

It really depends on what you're looking for. NC tends to be crowded and is a major outlet shopping destination. Stowe has none of that particular type of commercialism.... it's more of an upper-crust artsy little mountain town with skiing and other recreation.

Both nice towns, but quite different IMHO.
