Montreal to NYC and we want to stop somewhere in souther VT

We are driving back to NYC from Montreal and thought that we would come back through Vermont and find a nice place to stay for one or even two nights in southern Vermont. We are traveling with our two kids, 12 and 7, and would like to find a place where we could relax, swim, maybe hike - the end of a long road trip. Thanks.

Look around Keene NH, just off Rt 9, several chain hotels that fit your requirements.

Keene is WAY out of your way and is in New Hampshire which you didn't ask about.

I'd check out the Manchester VT area. Lots of accommodations to choose from. You can go swimming at Emerald Lake State Park north of town in Dorset. You can hike right from town up Mt. Equinox.

I agree with Vter, Manchester is a great choice.

There is also a marble quarry swimming hole in Dorset right off of Rt. 30 if your kids are good swimmers (no shallow part, just a deep old marble quarry filled with water).

From Burlington, Rt. 7 is the simplest, all the way to Manchester, but is the most heavily traveled route.

2 alternate routes (Both routes are more scenic.. The 1st route being a little bit faster, and the 2nd route is probably the most scenic, you drive a little slower but it is the straightest line.

Rt 7 to Vergennes, 22a to Poultney and rt 30 to Manchester(save a little time if you go through Wells, taking you off rt 30 for a bit)

Rt. 7 to Middlebury, rt 30 from Middlebury to Manchester (Wells notation above, applies here, too)

The Manchester stop is great advice. Two places to spend the night in Manchester that very family friendly with pools are The Palmer House and the Aspen. While in town a visit to the NorthShire Book store is a must. There tons of hiking opportunities around town or within a short drive. A couple favorites are Lye Brook Falls and the Grout Pond area on the Kelly Stand which has a great swimming area as well as hiking.

I'm so sorry, didn't mean to step on anyone's territory. We have used that area several times and found it to have what we were looking for. It is an easy drive from Rt 91 and a bit more southern than Manchester. Again, my apologies.
