Pls suggest day trips from Burlingon area

We will be spending 2 weeks in S Hero. Can anyone suggest some day trips from our base?

We like history, easy hiking, shopping, and any dog friendly suggestions welcome.

Thanks!

I'd suggest a day trip to Vergennes, which is about an hour south of South Hero. You could stop in for breakfast (or lunch, if it's later in the day) at the Three Squares Café (http://www.3squarescafe.com). Then head over to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum: http://www.lcmm.org -- well worth a visit.

Depending on when you go, there's a good chance a great show will be on stage at the historic Vergennes Opera House: http://www.vergennesoperahouse.org/home/events). They often have free summer concerts on the common, too, and other special events; check out the calendar on the Vergennes website, which includes information about some special events coming up in August: vergennes.org/annual-events-page/#tabs-4. If you're there in the evening, have dinner at the Red Mill restaurant.

Shelburne is another great day trip and is even closer than Vergennes. Our favorite spots are the Shelburne Museum (www.shelburnemuseum.org) and Shelburne Farms (www.shelburnefarms.org).

That sounds like two lovely days, thank you.

We were also thinking of exploring the NY side of the lake. Any suggestions?

Fort Ticonderoga is a lot of fun. Some people like Ausable Chasm, but we found it rather crowded when we went (several years ago).

Also (again, depending on when you go), there are several fairs and field days taking place throughout Vermont in the summer and fall. Lots of fun! Here's a list:

Burlington is a great place for a day or two. Walking on the rec path along the lake is superb, as is walking/shopping around Church St. The Spirit of Ethan Allen lake tour is also a fun 1-2 hour excursion.

Stowe and Waterbury also make a nice day trip. In Stowe: walking the rec path, driving up the Mt Mansfield toll road, and browsing in the cool little artsy shops are excellent. In Waterbury: visiting the nearby Cold Hollow cider mill are fun tourist stops.

Closer to S. Hero is Niquette Bay State Park in Colcester, which has some great walking/light hiking trails and has an off-leash area for the pooch(es).

Thank you both for the suggestions. I'll start to research for these outings.

Sometimes its hard to travel with a dog so the pooch place sounds grrrreat!

We travel with our dog most of the time. There are a few websites that offer info on dog-friendly accomodations, restaurants, activities. One is bringfido.com, but a quick google search will turn up others. Some of Burlington's restaurants with outdoor seating allow you to bring your furry friend(s). Also, here is info on off-leash dog parks in Burlington:

www.enjoyburlington.com/Parks/DogParks.cfm

I know my dog has enjoyed the short walks available in the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge (on-leash of course), but you and your dog will need bug repellent.

If you want to take a very dog-centric day trip, go to Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury. (About 1:45 from Burlington). No matter how often I visit, I feel the bonds with dogs past and present:

http://www.dogmt.com/

If you go on August 5, they have the Summer Dog Party, but you are always free to walk the grounds and paths or let your dog take a swim in the pond.

St. Johnsbury is also an interesting town.

A short drive from there puts you in the scenic Lake Willoughby area of the Northeast Kingdom. (91 to 5 to 5A). Approaching the lake on 5A you can really see the glacial cut that shaped it. Figure about 4:30 to 5:00 driving from and back to Burlington.

Thanks Foof! I remember seeing a piece on Dog Mountain on tv once. Didn't realize we won't be too far away for exploring.

Our dog is insulin dependent diabetic- any reccomendations for a vet in Burlington area just in case?

I can't recommend a vet, but there are lots of local people who participate in TA. I do know there is a 24 hr. hospital in Williston, just a couple miles from Burlington:

I have never used it, but I looked it up at one point just for peace of mind when traveling with Sheba.

I suggest a separate post on the vet issue. I am sure you will get some good recommendations.
