Vermont with Grandchildren

We would love to bring our 8 and 10 year old grandchildren for a road trip to Vermont. The 8 year old was Gretl in the high school production of Sound of Music, so she would be interested in the vonTrappe home. Can you please suggest some ofther interesting areas for their ages? Thank you. We would be coming in late June.

Rent bikes and meander along the Stowe and/or Burlington rec paths, stopping to swim when/if the urge strikes. Drive up the Mt. Mansfield toll road and let the kids scramble around on the trails w/ spectacular views in the background. Drive north from Stowe on Rt 108 thru Smugglers Notch, stopping at the top to let the kids climb on the huge boulders.

Jumping in for a sec....Chris and liz...is the boulder area on 108 obvious? My kids would love to climb around giant rocks, just need to know where to find it. :)

rizzo0904, yes there are only a handful of pull offs near the top of Smuggler's Notch and there is good scrambling and exploring all along through there. The bigger problem, especially if you go on a weekend, may be finding a place to park as it can get pretty congested in there. If you check out this map, www.vtstateparks.com/pdfs/smuggstrails.pdf on the left side of Route 108 (coming from Stowe), there is a "Smuggler's Cave Information Booth" with an x marking the spot. There is a small parking lot there, and before you get to that point (coming from Stowe) there are a number of smaller pull offs along the side of Route 108.

Thanks. We will be there mid week, so hopefully crowds won't be too bad.

Agreed. The largest parking area is at the highest elevation on Rt. 108. You can't miss it. There are large boulders and lots of places to explore and scramble all around it.
