Staying in Urbanna, things to do?

Hi, we will be travelling to Virginnia in Early September, staying initially with friends near Charlottsville for 5 days, who will take us to Shenandoh, Blue ridge mountains etc, we will then leave them and take a hire car, and stay for 3 nights in Urbanna at the atherstone B&B, before moving on to Washington DC for a few days before coming home to the UK. What would be good things to do form Urbanna? We are a couple with a 17 year old daughter, not in to theme parks, like to hike, like the beach, and some history and Art and our daughter loves to shop?

thanks Sue

If you head south on Route 17 you will end up in Yorktown and then Williamsburg, Jamestown area-Revolutionary war and Colonial American history.

Through Newport News/Norfolk will get you to Virginia Beach, but all of this is a fair drive from Urbanna.

If you head north, Tappahannock is a neat old town. Across the Rappahannock river along route 3 you will find Stratford Hall which was the birthplace of Robert E. Lee. Also near there is Colonial Beach on the Potomac river. An old resort town, which I hear is experience a bit of a revival. Personally, I have never been there.

Visiting Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown will certainly give you a good dose of history. Your daughter can also get a dose of shopping at the all the outlet stores in Williamsburg.

Another good daytrip would be to Norfolk, especially to see the excellent Chrysler Museum of Art. There are a lot of nautical themed attractions (such as the USS Wisconsin battleship) and shopping at Waterside.

And, of course, for the beach you'd probably enjoy Virginia Beach. The weather will still be nice and warm in early September, but the crowds will be gone because summer vacation will be over.

The Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News is full of art and has a wonderful gift shop! Their gift shop is not like your ordinary gift shop, it's just great.

Newport News also has The Mariners' Museum which is rich in history as well as Lee Hall Mansion and Endview Plantation.

Have fun!

Urbanna is a quaint, snoozy little waterfront town. There's not much to do there except ride bikes, walk around, look at boats and pre-revolutionary buildings and eat seafood. However you are right on the Rappahannock which is one of the cleanest rivers in Virginia, and connects to the Chesapeake Bay. Boating is why people go there. Suggest you take a sail or cruise, or go fishing. Even a small rowboat or canoe would help get you out on the water from the small harbor, which is what Urbanna is all about. Quaint nearby towns to visit would include Irvington, Deltaville, Reedville or Mathews. From Reedville you can take a ferry for a daytrip over to Tangier or Smith Islands, inhabited by crab fishermen and home of the best crabcakes on earth. Old house and garden plantation tours might be neat. In the Williamsburg area, Jamestowne and Yorktown are very educational. Find a riverfront beach and kick back!

Urbana is a very nice small town, great place to walk around and visit. Not a whole lot going on. For shopping with a teenager I would go to the outlet shops in Williamsburg.

Near Stratford Hall is George Washington's birthplace and family burial ground. The Westmoreland State Park is also in that area and a great place to look for sharks teeth, I remember finding tons there as a kid.

Skip Tappahannock, it is not that exciting. There are a few antique stores, but thats about it.

Have a great time exploring the Middle Peninsula/ Northern Neck of Virginia.

There is a wonderful trail called Hickory Hollow Natural Area (250 acres, trails, birds) in Kilmarnock off Route 3, probably 30 minutes or so from Urbanna. You can Google for a trail map and there are usually maps at the trailhead. Happy trails.
