planning BRP/Skyline Drive excursion-help needed

Greetings, all! Husband & I are planning our first fall colors trip and need some advice. We will be leaving Washington DC area on Saturday, Oct 25. Two days at the Biltmore, Sun-Mon, Return on Tuesday. In between, we have a one-night stopover in Blacksburg, for parent's weekend. Clearly, we do not want to travel the entire length of the BRP and Skyline Drive, but would like to hit some of the nicer areas as long as we can do so reasonably and still arrive at our destinations. Probably the most leisurely day of travel will be between Blacksburg and Asheville, but I am sure we will want to see some of the Shenandoah area, too. On our return, we will travel the entire distance from Ashville to DC in one day, so we probably would not spend much time on the scenic routes. Thoughts, suggestions?
