A few days in Virginia

My Wife and I will be in Washington DC next week and have never explored Virginia. Would like to spend about 3 days in scenic area. Historic sites and winery in the area would be a plus . Have to drive back to NYC so do not want to go too far south. Also would appreciate any B&B or Hotel recommendations

I would head west to the Warrenton area and then south through Culpeper and end up in Charlottesville.

Nice drive, wineries along the way, then visit Monticello and/or Montpelier.

You can drive back via Skyline Drive.

I agree totally with jwhiteree

. We belong to a couples social group here in DC and Charlottesville is the favorite couples getaway spot for most of us. Like many other locales in Virginia, it has exceptional outdoor beauty especially in the spring and it is not isolated . There are many historic venues, over 20 wineries, and an amazing array of restaurants in and around the town.

You do not need to make detailed plans ahead of time . Everything of interest is set up for walk in traffic including the wineries all of which have daily tasting room hours. We have a recent report of three new boutique brew pubs west of town that offer beer tasting and pub food.

Our group is particularly fond of staying at B and B's whenever we travel there because there are so many interesting ones and the innkeepers are

always prepared to provide excellent concierge service including making reservations for tour times at Monticello.

Our favorite is The Inn at Sugar Hollow Farm. They have a spectacular setting in a little valley very close to the Shenandoah National Park. It is a peaceful, relaxing spot to retreat back to after a day of touring and wine tasting and there restaurants about ten minutes away. We found ou on our last visit that trip advisor is now religiously following google maps practice of locating rural properties based on where their rural free delivery mail is delivered from not where they are located. The Inn at Sugar Hollow Farm is now listed under Crozet Va. , but you can put their name in the search box to get to their trip advisor listing

One final suggestion would be to do your Montpelier tour on your way from DC. You can google Montpelier to determine the best route depending on where you are in DC. When you leave Montpelier ,you should take Rte 20 SW to Barboursville [ where there is a great winery ] and then west 7 miles on US 33 to US29, then south into Charlottesville
