Which area to stay in Washington DC

Which areas are best to stay in DC? Tend to favour somewhere with a villagey / independent feel, with interesting restaurants & shops. I don't know the city at all so a rough idea woulD be much appreciated. Thanks!

I suggest you post this in the "District of Columbia" forum.

Also, if you want specific suggestions for hotels, be sure to give the dates of your visit and your budget in dollars (not "reasonable" or "budget")

Arlington or Alexandria in Va or Silver Spring, Md are convenient to the metro, but not really villagey. Leesburg may have more of a village feel, but will require much more effort to get into DC.

I would stay in Alexandria or Arlington for the best prices and take the metro into DC. Hotels in the city can get very expensive during the season. Also, not sure what village means. Check out Georgetown and Dupont Circle for fun neighborhoods to stay in if $ is not a big concern.

Vienna has a somewhat "village" feel and is convenient to Dulles airport and the Metrorail system (tube) to get you around DC and the metro area. There is great little pub there called the Vienna Inn and its close to world class shopping in Tysons Corner.
