Where to go in month of June ?

We live in Colorado and we are thinking of going somewhere in the east coast. Have three kids under 7 and the the boys love all kinds of bugs, animals etc.

What is a good place to spend the month of June with lots of kids activities around ?

Virginia ? North carolina or Florida ?

What do you guys suggest ? Also, where do I look for monthly rentals ?

Well if an abundant supply of bugs is the goal, Florida is your destination. Here in Va we have some cool bugs and lots of wild animals. Deer, bear, turkey, dove, quail, fox, bobcat and some say mountain lion. Of course the squirrel and chipmunk, groundhogs and possum and many birds.

Shenandoah National Park would allow you to see most if not all of those.

The Hampton Roads region of Virginia (Williamsburg to Virginia Beach) is *very* kid-friendly.

In Newport News, you'll find the Virginia Living Museum, home to animals in their natural habitats, an indoor and an outdoor aviary with coastal birds, an aquarium, a planetarium and, starting May 28th, a butterfly habitat. Right across the street is the SPCA Petting Zoo and Animal Sanctuary. A two-minute drive from there is the Mariners' Museum (with the Monitor Center and the International Small Craft Center). and the Peninsula Fine Arts Center (which has a kids make-and take room). And the 8000+ acre Newport News Park offers ranger-led nature programs in addition to boating, fishing, bicycling, hiking, disc golf...

In Hampton, the whole family should enjoy the Virginia Air and Space Museum (which, in addtion to its NASA and flight exhibits, is hosting Grossology, which is an apt name but lots of fun).

The Oceanfront and the Virginia Aquarium can be found at Virginia Beach, Nauticus (with the Battleship Wisconsin), the Virginia Zoo, the Norfolk Naval Base are all in Norfolk. The Children's Museum and Virginia Sports Hall of Fame are in Portsmouth. And the Great Dismal Swamp is in Chesapeake, at the NC/VA border.

I haven't even mentioned the Historic Triangle (Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown) or Busch Gardens yet. Plus, there are a number of festivals during the summer as well. Whew!

Your best bet to get an overall view of the area (and phone numbers for local visitor centers) is to order the Virginia Travel guide (1-800-VISITVA) or visit virginia.org. Whereever you go, have a great time! :-)
