Blue Ridge Parkway in VA

We will driving from Washington D.C. to the Blue Ridge Parkway in VA. What is the distance in miles? Is it worth going to that area or should we stay closer to D.C., Philly, and Richnond areas. We're not sure how to plan our itinery and we must end up a week later in D.C.

Thanks

I have no idea if it's worth it to you. Knowing what your interests are would help as well as when you're travelling.

The Blue Ridge Parkway entrance in Waynesboro is 2.5-3 hours from DC. The BRP is 469 miles long, ends in Cherokee NC, and is a scenic drive. You may also consider driving all or part of the Skyline Dr in Shenandoah National Park. The northern entrance to SNP is at Front Royal, about 1.5 hr from DC. Skyline Dr has numerous scenic overlooks, is 105 miles long, and ends at Waynesboro. Check out these websites for additional details:

Hope this helps.

Seven years ago we tried to enter BRP from Waynesboro on our way to Charlottesville and the BRP was closed because of fog in the area. We weren't going to be on it that long because we were going to Charlottesville. Can you get on and off easily and is there lodging in the area. Your information was great.

Here is a good map of BRP indicating points of interest and entrance/exits:

For example, there are exits at Steeles Tavern (Rt 56) and Buena Vista.

It's not unusual for a section to close temporarily due to weather conditions, repair, accident, whatever, so keep this number handy, 828-298-0398, it's the BRP information line and provides recorded updates of road status and detours.
