Annapolis to Ashville with overnight stay in VA

We're going to be traveling at the end of March with 3 kids(3,10,14), and we're looking into breaking this long car ride by staying somewhere in VA for a night. Which place would be nice to stay and visit, have good dinner and maybe see one attraction? Thank you in advance.

If you are heading towards Asheville on I81 South, you and your family might enjoy the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton. It's not far off the highway and is very well done. From Staunton, it would be about a 5.5 hour drive to Asheville.

Thanks for this suggestion. Are you familiar with Roanoke or Lexington area?

I'm generally familiar with both areas and have stayed in both places in the past. Lexington is a great town filled with civil war history, and Roanoke has a neat vibe in the downtown area.
