Places to Visit with Kids - Washington DC to OBX

We are driving from Washington DC down to the OuterBanks in April with our boys who are all under 11. We have two or three nights to get down there so wondering where would be good to visit on the way? Any suggestions gratefully received!

US Marine COrp Museum at Quantico

US Civil War Battlefields

Fredericksburg: http://www.nps.gov/frsp/fred.htm

Petersburg: http://www.nps.gov/pete/index.htm

These are all in the same area and lean toward the historic.

How much under 11? I agree with the prior list of educational / historic sites. If you want more amusement-focused places to stop, your route will take you directly past King's Dominion (a major theme park with some serious rollercoasters) and Busch Gardens Williamsburg (another theme park with a different mix of rides). I think, but am not certain, that they'll be open on weekends in April. You might also consider staying a night at Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg, which is a kid-focused resort hotel with a large indoor pool / waterslide complex.
