Between Newport Oregon and Lake Crescent WA

Would like to know where to stop for a night between Newport Oregon and Lake Crescent, assuming I cannot get a reservation at Quinault Lodge.

I do not have a sense of distance and time required to get from A to B. Would like to stop overnight somewhere so that we can visit Quinault Rain Forest and Hoh Rain Forest

Well, Lk Quinault would be ideal to break up the trip--the Lk Quinault Resort across from the lake isn't a bad mom & pop type place if the lodge is sold out.

Otherwise, somewhere around Ocean Shores wouldn't be bad for a night. The Ocean Crest in Moclips is quiet and on a bluff above the beach.

It's about a six hour trip altogether but seeing the Hoh, etc can take up the better part of a day so I think stopping is a good idea.

I'd go to the Quinault Beach Resort at the entrance to Ocean Shores. It's the newest hotel along the coast. It has an Indian casino, if you care for that. The swimming pool and exercise room are great. It's located right on the beach.

If you didn't care about scenery, but just wanted something that fell along the route, there's a Guesthouse Inn in Aberdeen that looks fairly new.

I wouldn't see both the Quinault and Hoh rain forests. They are rather similar. You could do some different things around Lake Quinault: rent a boat, drive around the lake, hike to the Big Cedar (1/2 mile), or drive up to Higley Peak (10 mile dirt road followed by 1/2 mile hike) for the view of the snow-capped Olympics and down onto the lake.

If you didn't have a lot of time for the area, you could see the Big Cedar and picnic at July Creek (great view of the lake) without much detour from the highway.

I've posted ideas of what to see in the area here:

I'll be adding directions to Higley Peak, pictures, and a description this evening.

I hope you will take advantage of our, as you know from Ottawa, long days, leave early, and sight see the northern OR coast.
