Best route to Sunrise?

I am interested in checking out and hiking in the Sunrise area of Mt. Rainier. I have visited the western side of the park previously so am not making that part of my visit this time. Given that, what is the best route from Portland? I will be continuing east after I visit the park.

Thanks in advance.

Tahe I-5 North to Hwy 12 East. Make sure and look at a map before you start your trip. Chuck...

Best route from Portland would be north on I-5 to Hwy 12 (exit 68). Follow Hwy 12 through Packwood to Hwy 123. This will take you into the east side of the park. Travel north past the junction of Hwy 410 - about 15mi. The road to Sunrise is just a few miles further north.

If you have not driven across the park on earlier trips, you might also enter the park at Ohanepacosh and drive up to Grove of the Patriarchs and the Box Canyon of the Cowlitz.

To continue east after you visit Sunrise, you can either return to the Hwy 410 junction and take Chinook Pass east, or go back to Hwy 12 and head east over White Pass. Both are very scenic. White Pass is somewhat quicker. They both end up at Naches/Yakima.

You don't mention when you're going, but you might want to check out snow levels as well before going.

Might melt off before you get here - but if you're going soon you might need to plan for some snow.
