1. Re: Sales tax on clothing question

In DC proper, sales tax is 5.75% on *everything* including clothing. In the surrounding jurisdictions (Maryland and Virginia), it's 5% on *everything*.

In NYC, items of clothing costing up to $110 are exempt from the sales tax. But any individual item that costs over $110 is subject to the city's 8.375% sales tax *on the entire amount of the item*.

So you could theoretically buy $2,000 worth of clothes in NYC and not pay any tax (if all items are under $110). Or you could spend $500 on a suit and pay $41.88 in tax.

Further considerations: If you're coming in August, governments in DC, Maryland and Virginia have been known to declare sales-tax holidays on clothing during parts of the month to stimulate back-to-school sales. See …about.com/od/shopping/a/SalesTaxHoliday.htm for details from last year, hopefully they'll update it for 2007 when they know it.

And if you can somehow stopover in the states between Maryland and NYC to do some shopping: Pennsylvania and New Jersey have no sales tax on clothing without restrictions on pricing. And Delaware is the best, as there's no sales tax on *any* merchandise.

Clear as mud? Happy shopping!
