Fairview Park Marriot in Falls Church

We are travelling for the 1st time to Washington with 3 children(9, 4, 3). Want to find accomodations that are reasonable. The Fairview Park Marriot has a great rate of $79.00. Not sure if this is too good to be true. Is this an ideal location to go back and forth from DC. We want to do the zoo, Smithsonian and some other sites in DC. Hoping to also be close to the metro. The Marriot site said it offers a shuttle to the Metro Parking area. Please help.

Have you read the reviews on this site? Are you driving down from Rochester?

It is certainly not an ideal place to stay if you wish to visit DC. It is not that close to any Metro station and I don't think there is much for a tourist in the way of restaurants unless you have a car. You trade a lot of convenience's for a cheaply priced room.

We are driving down from Rochester and will have a car. Any other suggestions on affordable lodging under $150.00 a night.

What are your travel dates?

With 5 people in one room, you may want to look into some of the suite type hotels outside of DC.

And what was the total amount you wanted to spend the entire time? Reason asking, is because the hotel rates typically change if you include a weekend or holiday dates.

First the questions - what type of room were you able to book? If you have a suite, then I think this might work out fine for you.

Now the cons:

The hotel gets mixed reviews.

It is not really an ideal location for visiting the city, especially using public transport. If the hotel shuttle to metro is reliable, it could be worth looking into, though.

Now the pros:

$79/night is an excellent rate and you probably won't do better than that closer to the city, especially in a suite (if that's what you got).

You can drive into the city fairly easily from the hotel. Just get on I-66. Just don't try to go during rush hour. Traffic is terrible into the city until about 9:30-10:00 am and out of the city between 3:30 pm-6:30 pm.

Since you'll have a car, you can explore the area for dinner if you don't want to stay in the city. Probably the area around the Tysons Corner Mall will offer the most dining options. It's only a few minutes drive. The mall itself is also nice and has some decent restaurants. (We like Coastal Flats and have taken our 4 year old there.) It could be a nice break for the kids after lots of site-seeing.

Enjoy your stay!

A recent poster got a good deal at One Washington Circle hotel ( www.onewashingtoncircle.com )

and also good rates at Melrose Hotel: www.melrosehotel.com

They are both located in DC and both have recently been renovated. Nothing too fancy but it's in a really nice area and you are in the heart of DC near Georgetown and you can look at some traveler's photos and pictures from this site.

Hope this helps.

tim 90 -

Don't get your hopes up - the One Wash Circle was booked for July - not for next week. The short notice may be what's working against you. Of course, it would be worth looking at any of the downtown suite hotels. Maybe you'll get lucky!

Good luck!

I can't address the hotel itself, but that is a good rate and it wouldn't be too bad of a location if you have a car. There is a very nice (and expensive) restaurant located near the hotel named 2941. There are also many restaurants within 15 mins of the hotel (some closer) as well as fast food options. One good option is the cluster of restaurants off Gallows Road, about a half mile before you hit Lee Hwy. Google Map your hotel location and you'll see those roads. Sweetwater Tavern (same group that owns Coastal Flats and others) is one of my favorites.

For getting to DC, you would want to hop on 495N to 66E. Quite frankly, 66 can be a mess at any hour of the day. Prepare for backups/traffic jams in the morning between 6:30 and 9:30 and from around 5 pm to 8 pm. Nothing terrible, but it could take you 30-40 minutes to make the 10-12 mile drive into the city.

If you want to metro, you have the Dunn-Loring station and West Falls Church stations nearby. Dunn-Loring is closer, but I'm not sure about parking there. You would just take Route 50 to Gallows and the metro will be on your left, about 1/2 mile past Lee Hwy. You may have more parking options at West Falls Church, which is less than 10 mins from your hotel. To get to WFC, the quickest way will probably be to take 495N to 66E, then take your first exit on Route 7 East. Go about 1/3 mile and take a left at the first light onto Haycock. Take a left at the 2nd stoplight (about 3/4 mile up Haycock) and the metro is on your right -- 5 level parking deck.

The Melrose Hotel and the ohter one mentioned are quite pricey. We were hoping for a good deal since we won't really be spending time in the hotel. Driving 10-15 mins to restaurants is not really a big deal. However we were hoping to not drive into DC since we have heard it can be very challenging. Hoping that getting to the metro from this hotel in Fairview Park will be easy.
