Since it is a city, you can find a great range of prices. There are cheap eats and dirt cheap eats guides on here:

One thing I would like to tell you is that there is a large Ethiopian community in DC. If you like to try new cuisines and haven't had Ethiopian, this is a good place to try it if it isn't available where you are.

What types of places were you eating in when you were in Vegas? We're pretty familiar with Vegas (going again in a few weeks), so if we know what "reasonable" there is, we can give you a better comparison.

DC can be super-expensive or done on the cheap, much like Vegas. For good "cheap eats" check the Washingtonian, which lists both cheap eats and dirt cheap eats. There are a million happy hour choices that bring down costs, too.

The Smithsonian museums are free and you could easily never spend a dime to get into a touristy place. On the other hand, you can also drop $20 in admission for somewhere like the Newseum.

And, of course, the weak US dollar will probably help it seem even more reasonable!

The new President will be inaugurated on January 20, 2009. The week before and after will be extra expensive and extra crowded here in DC. Plan accordingly.

For the most part I would say DC was inexpensive. Lots of cheap eats around. Most of the tourist sites are free. And metro is cheap compared to driving everywhere. Yes parking is a bit much for parking in the immediate downtown garages but what major city doesn't have that. So I would say yes to your question.

It's all relative--based on the government's per diem travel schedule (hotel and meals cost), DC is the fourth most expensive city in the continental U.S. (behind New York, Boston and Chicago), but above cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles and Atlanta.

Which means that the typical business traveler will find it to be a relatively expensive city. Those with time on their hands to seek out a bargain-priced meal or hotel room should do okay in any of these cities.

Where have you been eating in Vegas? Vegas is an exception to the normal U.S. city. Some places provide artificially cheap meals, drinks or hotel rooms since the providers are usually looking to attract your casino action. If the business has no connection to a casino--or the casino doesn't need to use subsidies to attract gamblers--then Vegas becomes one of the more expensive places to visit.

Vegas is also an exception so far as buffets--there are either cheap (subsidized) ones where you can get three meals a day, or there are upscale ones that might run $60 and up for dinner. Very little in the middle.

In Washington, there are fairly inexpensive buffets in the suburbs for lunch or dinner, primarily Asian, using inexpensive ingredients. Otherwise, the buffets you'll find are typically either upscale hotel breakfasts ($20+) or nicer restaurants' Sunday brunches ($25+).

Lots of steak options in and around town, with many added over the last few years. Where are you planning on staying? That will dictate specific recommendations.

There are many lunchtime buffets in DC. My favorite is Sizzling Express at 18the and M Streets NW, downstairs. But none that I know of are open for dinner. And most are the kind that charge by weight, not a fixed price.

Many of the Indian restaurants also have buffet lunches.

DC is on the slightly expensive side for hotels and the like but much cheaper than new york or boston. you can get an above average hotel for under $150.00 in the center of the city probably a lot less if you like. Like everyone says, the food depends on you. I found, however, that the food seemed a lot fresher than other places I've been so that I was willing to pay the price which was not that bad to begin with. The big plus is that most of the museums are free and what a beautiful collection they are. This allows you to spend a bit more elsewhere.
