12 hour layover in DC, desire massage near White House

Will be arriving at the airport in DC on Monday, May 25, 2009 around 6 am. Desire to catch a taxi or???to The White House area for a tour, if possible, see a FEW sights and get a relaxing massage for 2 at a great day spa that has an atmosphere that is conducive to lounging for a couple of hours. Have a late lunch healthy and be back at IAD before 4 pm for our evening flight to Italy. Any suggestions to help make my husband's birthday flow smoothly will be appreciated. Thanks...also let me know if this idea is do-able without feeling rushed.

Any particular reason why you want to have the massage near the White House? I think you'll be a lot more relaxed for your long flight and make more efficient use of your time if you did the day spa thing out near Dulles after you finish touring DC, just before you head back to the airport.

Try Shapes, four miles from the airport, in Dulles Town Center. http://www.shapesdayspa.com

Monday, May 25 is Memorial Day next year. Bad news for seeing the inside of the White House, which will be closed for tours. Good news for traffic conditions in the area from and to Dulles.

Since you'll be arriving in DC proper fairly early (7 am?), focus first on seeing the various memorials (which are open 24/7), then hit a couple of Smithsonian museums when they open at 10 a.m., head out to Dulles Town Center around 2.

Thanks for the tips. I was thinking that we could walk around down near all the memorials and into a day spa, too and only need a cab twice...Do you have any other suggestions for transportation to DC proper from IAD and back? Also a nice restaurant near the day spa?

I stand corrected--the day spa at Dulles Town Center is not Shapes, it's Four Seasons (no relation to the upscale hotel chain). Maybe someone else can chime in. Restaurants near Four Seasons are all pretty much chains (Cheesecake Factory, Macaroni Grill, Benihana). Use your own judgement.

The best restaurant is near Shapes in Herndon--Sweet Basil Cafe.

Traveling from Dulles at 6 a.m., taxi is really your only option. And heading back with public transportation schedules in holiday mode, I'd hop a taxi as well. Your time is at a premium.

But I wouldn't rule out renting your own car, especially given the cost of a taxi (probably $70 with tip each way to/from downtown DC) and the light holiday traffic. Not to mention that the spa/restaurant locations, while close to the airport, will necessitate additional taxi rides.

Also, if your luggage isn't checked all the way through to Italy and you need to do something with it (and your carry-ons) while you tour DC, the trunk of a rental car is a good solution.

No personal recommendations for day spas if you decide to do so in town, but the one at the Mandarin Oriental is probably closest to the memorials (Washington Monument, Jefferson).

Read the reviews in this piece from Washingtonian magazine. Andre Creky would be close to the White House, Celadon would be fairly close to the Smithsonian museums on the northern side of the mall. Everything else on the list will be more out-of-your way and require a taxi or Metro.

Thanks for the article link which is quite helpful. The 4 seasons spa link turned out to be part of the hotel...Is there a 4 seasons spa in the town center? If you have a web page address that may be the place to go. The Mandarin oriental looks great, too for lounging...although pricey.

The Four Seasons Day Spa is part of a beauty salon operation at Dulles Town Cetner. No website, but call 703-421-9800 for info.

Thanks again. Will consider the pros and cons of car rental vs taxi. Would like a quiet place for massage and lounging afterward in a coed area...something comparable to San francisco's SenSpa or Nob Hill Spa where we could rest an hour or 2 before the long flight.
