Washington DC subway system

Just wondering, what's the general opinion of the DC subway system? Slow/fast, good/bad? Thanks!

Good way to get around. Why not do some searching on the forum and at the official website www.wmata.com to get more info?

Nearly every visitor I've ever met has nothing but admiration and wonderment for the DC metro system. It's one of the cleanest you'll find, it's safe, and the ability to read a display of how many minutes until the next train arrives is invaluable.

That said, as a local, my main gripes are that it takes a fair amount of time to get from the curb to the platform (longer escalators, not as quick as say, NYC) and that the coverage of the city is limited. Service stop time at midnight during the week is seen as a limitation by some as well.

Not too fast and not too slow, but quite good most of the time. When they do track work on the weekends, it can be bad.

Some other negatives are: (1) the escalators are VERY often broken (they are damaged by the rain); but usually at least one Up-escalator is in service at each station; there are also slevators for the handicapped. (2) the suburban parking lots fill up quite early on Monday thru Thursday mornings; (more lots are gradually opening, but this takes years to accomplish). (3) On weekends, trains in outlying areas may run as much as 15 minutes apart (WMATA is proposing a further cutback to 20 minutes apart). This is less of a problem in downtown D.C. where 2 lines run together, doubling the frequency of trains (2) the fare structure is complicated and varies by the length traveled.

As a tourist it works great -- safe, clean and fast. If u ride it as a commuter u will experience way to often breakdowns and delays.
