The zoo is near two Metro stations. Woodley Park/Zoo is south of the Zoo and has a collection of fairly average places nearby on Connecticut Avenue, none of the places are all that great imo.

North of the zoo is Cleveland Park, several places around the Metro station there. Are you looking for something casual for lunch to combine with a zoo visit, or a nice place for dinner?

If it's just for lunch, casual, I'd recommend just getting off the Metro at Cleveland Park station (or walking up Connecticut Ave from the zoo) and seeing what interests you, there are quite a few places in the area ranging from Irish pubs to more formal restaurants. If you're looking for a nice dinner and prepared to spend some $$$ I'd suggest Palena, although they have a cheaper menu if you're just stopping in for a quick bite. Not sure if they're open for lunch though.

When going to the zoo, get off at Cleveland Park; the walk from the Woodley metro is uphill.

For Italian, we love Dino, right by the Cleveland Park metro.

On the east side of Connecticut Avenue at Cleveland Park, about a five minute walk north of the Zoo, there are several terrific places to eat, with a remarkable range.

For upscale "California" cuisine, we very much like Ardeo. For hearty - not chi-chi - French, Le Lavandou. For burgers, etc., the Woodley Park Grill - which is open only for dinner on weekdays.

I think the best restaurant on the South (Woodley Park Metro Station) is New Heights. It is American food and is located on Calvert Street near the corner of Connecticut Avenue.

We always stay in the Woodley Park/Zoo area when we visit DC. At the Woodley Park metro, on Connecticut Ave., I can recommend Petit Plats for wonderful French food, and the Lebanese Taverna for a wonderful experience as well as delicious (and surprisingly, not TOO exotic) cuisine. At the Cleveland Park metro area, just north of the zoo, we have enjoyed Spices, for pan-Asian food (the ginger salad is the best!), Ireland' Four Fields for pub grub, and Sorriso for refined Italian. Lots of good choices. I'd love to live in this area!

Oh, and ideas about visiting the zoo: we have visited the zoo twice from around 3pm until closing, and honestly, there's not much to see during that time. Animals are sleeping or hiding. Earlier in the day has to be better. Also, we charge in with enthusiam and hike down--and down--and down the hill on the Olmstead walk. To exit the zoo, it's a good long slog uphill when you're already tired. Pace yourself!

If you're not ready for the uphill return walk, I recall seeing signs that there's a shuttle cart that goes from the bottom of the hill all the way up to the top.

Not to far from the Zoo (you will probaby want a cab) is 2Amys. It is fantastic Italian. Well worth a $5-10 cab ride. There is a reason it is ranked 11 out of over 1000 dc area restaurnts.
