Arrived on time 7.45pm at IAD despite terrible weather on approach from the tail end of Hurricane Ida. Cleared immigration very quickly despite a US citizen jumping in front of us when the immigration officer called us from visitor queue. Welcome to America I thought. We then had to wait on our luggage which wasn't too long, 15mins ish. We took a Washington Flyer taxi to our hotel Holiday Inn Capitol. $60 plus tip. See my separate hotel review but it is a noisey and busy hotel with not much nearby other than museums.
After a mixed night's sleep, we headed out to Smithsonian Castle and had breakfast of coffee and muffin at it's cafe. We went to the American History museum and picked what we wanted to see as we had limited time, Star Spangled Banner, Pop Culture, First Ladies dresses, America on the Move and a few other small things. We had hotdogs and cokes in the Constitution Cafe. In the afternoon we walked to Federal Triangle and got metro tickets, 2 x $10 travel cards with some help from station worker. We took the metro to Union Station via Metro Center as we planned to spend afternoon there before Old Town Trolley Tour Monuments by Moonlight at 6.30pm. It was great (see review). We ate at America. It was awful (see review). We did have more time to pass than we expected as tour was leaving at 7.30pm not 6.30pm so we did the Postal Museum too. After night tour, we took the metro back to Metro Center then to L'Enfant Plaza. We got out the wrong exit and it was a bit quiet and lonely but we found our way to hotel quite quickly.
Friday 13th, we went to NASM for opening and got into queue to meet Alan Bean. I was born on the day he walked on the moon and was so excited to meet him. We didn't see much of the museum but it was the busiest museum I have ever seen. We were being picked up by a friend at 4pm so we took the metro from L'Enfant Plaza to Federal Triangle and went for lunch in Hard Rock Cafe and went to ESPN cafe shop. Took the metro back and got the right exit of L'Enfant plaza this time. We checked out the hotel and went to Reston with friend.
Sat 14th, our friend took us to NASM Udvar Hazy before our 5pm flight to San Diego. We saw Shuttle Enterprise and Enola Gay.
This was our second trip to DC and we loved it as much as the last time. Can't wait to go back.
