DC to Georgetown and Mt. Vernon/Old Town Alexandria

Hi all:

Just wondering if it makes sense to go to Mt. Vernon in the morning and go to Georgetown on the way back or is it better to go to Georgetown then to Mt. Vernon.

I wanted to do the following tours in Mt Vernon and wanted to get your feedback:

9:30 AM National Treasure Tour

11:30 AM Cruise

Also we wanted to stop by Old Town Alexandria as well.

Please let me know your thoughts!

Thanks!

Ellen

We visited Mount Vernon last autumn. Went on public transport (metro and bus), really think u need more than a few hours there. The boat trip alone lasted more than an hour, we queued an hour to get into the house and the tour then takes about half hour (the house is a must). Also quite a lot of walking between house, burial site and boat station. Would suggest you plan to get back to Georgetown late afternoon/evening for dinner.

I totally agree with essexfamily--a visit to Mt. Vernon warrants at least half a day. Not only will you need the extra time to wait in line for the tour of the mansion as essexfamily mentioned, but there are other tours available with your admission which are worthwhile, e.g. tours of the gardens, tours of the slave quarters, etc. Also, you'll want to spend some time in the orientation center and museum which are fairly new to Mt. Vernon.

agree with above and will add that Georgetown is more fun in the afternoon/evenings anyway.

would you recommend going straight to Mt. Vernon and then back to Georgetown at night and skip old alexandria?

I would go straight to Mt. Vernon then either Georgetown or Old Town Alexandria in the afternoon. You could go to Alexandria on the way back and then Georgetown in the evening after you go back to your hotel
