Which places are backpacks not allowed and are there lockers provided?

Every website I've looked at the for local tourists sites has a section which addresses this.

Phillips Collection:

Coats and Backpacks

The Phillips offers its visitors complimentary coat check service in the lobby. Backpacks are not allowed in the galleries and should be checked as well.




Capitol Building:


You will be able to find info on websites under visitors' info or security/policies, that sort of thing.

NOT taking a backpack as you are a tourist will speed you along most places. At minimum they will require you to submit it for a brief search. A few places will make you check it, depending on how big it is. A few places will let you bring it in but not wear it while walking around inside. At the Capitol Visitor Center, you cannot bring in any food or drink, amongst other things.
