Memorial Day weekend

I was planning a trip to DC for July 4th. Now,it looks like we might need to change our trip to Memorial Day weekend. What is this weekend like? Are there a lot of parades and activities?

The biggest thing is Rolling Thunder. Its loud and getting around the activities if you are in those locations can be a little bit of a pain. Lots of people will be around because it is a holiday weekend and there still may be some school groups still around. Come, plan out your trip, don't try to see everything and prioritize what you do want to see and you will be fine.

The National Memorial Day Concert, hosted by Gary Sinese and Joe Mantegna and broadcast on PBS, takes place on the grounds of the Capitol on Sunday, May 27th. I've been many times and it's an inspiring show. For details, see:

Memorial Weekend is a great weekend to visit; crowded but not too crowded; warm but not hot; parades, concerts, museums open late, Rolling Thunder, the paying of respect to the war dead, and many people just enjoying themselves.

By the way, the Memorial Day concert mentioned in #2 requires you to go through a metal detector and as it gets closer to the start, the line gets longer.

I volunteer at an Smithsonian info desk, and Memorial Day Weekend is one of my favorite times to be there.
