1st night in Crystal city

I am posting on here because it seems to have more traffic than the CC forums...

we are arriving DCA at 4:45 pm on 5/24 and staying at the Marriott crystal gateway.

can someone please recommend a few non chain restaurants for a family of 4 (boys 10 and 12) to eat dinner on the 1st night. I would like something fairly close by...either walking or a metro stop or 2.

I am not so concerned about price. I would just like something casual (table service). we won't be packing any dressier clothing,

Open to all types of food.

thanks!

I'll second Hamburger Hamlet. But, HUGE portions. Love the ice cream sundae dessert. Not sure what it is called.

There is a Crystal City forum? It has to be very small because Crystal City is just a very small area of Arlington County, despite the "City" in its name.

If your boys are more adventurous eaters try Jaleo. It is a tapas place. There is also a group of non-chain restaurants on 23rd Street. I have not been to any of them but several appear busy when my bus has gone by them.

I'm going to go over the menu at Jaleo because I think the rest of us would love it. My 10yo is a picky eater....for instance will eat grilled aspargus but not mashed potaoes, will eat lamb chops but not roasted chicken! No condiments of any kind...plain hamburger or hotdog.

He is not adventurous but I may be able to find something. He doesn't eat much (quantity wise) so if I find one or two things, we should be ok.

I will keep Hamburger Hamlet in mind as well!

Thank you!!!!

I thought you didn't want chain restaurants?

Jaleo will readily make accommodations for picky eaters - for example, serving their grilled asparagus or lamb chops plain, with sauce on the side. I've experienced this first-hand because when my nephew was younger, he was the world's pickiest eater, and Jaleo's kitchen/wait staff always cheerfully accepted our special requests for "plain food"!

IrishFan, I do prefer to not go to chains when traveling to places with great food. I figured if all else fails...I could do the reliable. If I ordered the gift card, I could always use it one night at our locat Legal Seafood.

Travelbug, that is good to know. My husband and I really like small plate restaurants, so this may work out well for us.
