Washington DC - NYC train...any recommended stopovers?

Hi

My husband and I and our 5 year old son will be in the US in January.

We will leaving Washington DC on January 23rd and then heading down to NYC by train. Heading home to Australia at the end of January.

We have a couple of days (probably 2) to play with (which leaves us about 6 days in NYC) and are wondering whether on the way from Washington DC to NYC, there are any worthwhile spots to stay for a night or two.

Looking for experiences that would be good for a 5 year old (but don't have to be totally 'kid' focussed). Any ideas?

Thanks!

Amanda

Honestly, I think (especially if you haven't been to NYC before) that 6 days in NYC will leave you feeling like you didn't see and do many things. That's how much there is to do there.

That said, if you still want to stop somewhere on your way up to NYC, you could consider stopping in Philadelphia. There's a lot of historical sites there as well as some great Italian food and cheesesteak sandwiches. Plus, for kids, there is the Please Touch Museum:

You can stop by Baltimore.

Yes, Baltimore is an option. It has a great aquarium that kids love. Check out their website. You will notice that the website is for both the Baltimore and DC aquariums. However, the Baltimore one is far superior to the DC one:

Baltimore is great and you could have a good all-over sense of it with just an overnight stay. Leave DC early, stay near the Inner Harbor and you can walk everywhere - catch an afternoon train the next day.

In addition to the aquarium, there is a great science center for kids. http://www.mdsci.org/ Old ships and a submarine to tour. Kids also just love riding the water taxi - though that will be cold in January - out to Ft. McHenry http://www.nps.gov/fomc/index.htm.

The Visionary Art museum is unique and very interesting, even or especially for a 5 year old. http://www.avam.org/

Also a great train museum. Check out b&o train museum. You can play by ear in January. No place will be booked and weather may impact decisions at that time of year.

Philly is a wonderfull town but IMO it iwll be a waste if you try to make it kid centric vs adult centric. Please Touch museum is not convenient to get to and is away from the major sites. The city is very charming and walkable with many 18th century buildings and historic sites open but they will bore your 5 year old.

IMO, Baltimore's inner harbor area, which is what everyone is talking about has will work better for you and your son see baltimore.org/about-baltimore/inner-harbor and tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60811-d26…

The trains between DC and NYC all stop in Baltimore and Phillyi so you won't need a car anywhere

Baltimore is boring. Philadelphia is worth a one day stopover.

Just make sure you don't accidentally get off the train in Newark, New Jersey.
