DC during Christmas school vacation time

My family is planning a 3/4 day trip to DC between xmas and new years. Any advice, info, tips etc... related to crowds and what to do? Already submitted requests for tours of White House, Supreme Court and Printing & Engraving thru our congress people. Would like to do Smithsonian, monuments, a little shopping for the ladies, fun dining. Traveling with two grown children ages 17 and 20. Thanks for any help.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is closed that week. The White House has many receptions to show off the Christmas decorations and public tours are few for that period, so don't get your hopes up. moneyfactory.gov/tours/washingtondctours.html

Start reading some of the topics on this forum, especially trip reports. You will learn a lot and get some ideas of how to arrange your trip.

That week is probably the most popular and crowded of the winter months. But nothing like what you will find some other times of the year, like right now. And you can see the monuments and memorials all lit up before dinner. Now you have to wait until after 9PM for any real darkness.

You're from Michigan so I'm sure you are used to the cold, but please be mindful of our unpredictable weather while you are walking around outside at that time of year.

You will be able to see the National Christmas Tree and the surrounding smaller trees decorated from each state. They usually also have a giant fire pit, some local choirs, and Santa.

Mt. Vernon and Woodlawn Plantation in Alexandria are also lovely at that time of year.

You may find some free seasonal performances at the Kennedy Center's Millenium Stage at 6:00 pm. They have free nightly performances all year but they may have some special seasonal events when you are here.

One other thing to see at that time of year. In the US Botanic Gardens next to the US Capitol they do a large train garden. Last year all the elements (except the trains and track) were made of natural materials like seeds, pods, sticks, twigs, limbs, pine cones, etc. It was very clever and quite interesting. They also had a display of the buildings of DC made of the same type materials.
