You will not find any agreement on "the best" out of many possibilities. I, for one, think the burgers at Shake Shack are terrible. And the highly rated BGR is only OK. But I do not eat hamburgers all that much, so I am no expert on that cuisine.

compared to the UK, they will all taste great.

look at the restaurant section for suggestions.

You can get a great burger at Capital Grill ( very fancy steak house) or anyplace that has the word pub in it's name.

Actually, we liked the Shake Shack's Burgers.

However, the best burgers we've found in DC are at Thunder Burger and Bar:

Burgers are one of the few consistent affordable meals in DC. Here is my top 5.

1) BGR

2 Burger Shake & Tap

3) Palena Cafe

4) Bobbys Burger Paradise

5) Five Guys

Overrated List:

1) Shake Shack - Don't get the hype at all. Flavorless small patty on the burger, frozen "crinkle" fries. Good shakes though.

2) Ray's Hell Burger - Started out as great hole in the wall with unique burger blends, devolved into a tourist trap cash machine.

The Heights restaurant - 1 block from Columbia Heights Metro. They have their own farm with grass-fed beef for the burgers, and they will even cook it rare! Great patio - Happy hour 4-7 at communal tables or the bar, a burger is $7.50. Then go across the street to the plaza and get FroYo for dessert.

Ray's Hell Burger has been putting out the same product for years now, at least to my taste. I don't see how it has supposedly declined since it's gotten more popular.
