Safe but affordable parking for a couple of weeks in DC

My son is finishing an internship this week in DC and will lose his parking at American University. He is needing to stay in the area to job search for a couple of weeks, but he has no place to park his car. We aren't that picky on location as long as it is safe and within walking distance of a metro stop. I need quick suggestions please.

In order to give advice, what do you consider to be "affordable"?

If you are thinking about parking in a suburban residential neighborhood near a Metro station, please be aware that many communities in that situation have a parking permit set up.

Unless he can move the car regularly, the satellite parking lot at National Airport is probably the cheapest around. There is a shuttle bus back to the Metro station.

If he just needs to warehouse it and doesn't need daily access to it, a few metro lots (Springfield, Greenbelt, and a few others I can't remember) offer multi-day parking. It'll be cheap (you'd only have to pay the daily fee of about $5 if you exit on a weekday), and as long as valuables aren't left in plain view it should be fairly safe.

He can get a temporary residential permit and just park on the street for free:
