Buses

I am having a hard time figuring out the buses. We are staying near the Zoo on the Northern part of Adams-Morgan or as per the map Lanier Heights. Wanted to avoid the 15 minute walk to the closest Metro - > Woodley park, esp after dark.

There seem to be many bus stops, but I can't find one that goes to the Mall -- I guess we could always bus it to Dupont circle and take the train from there?

Also, the buses that start with letters, such as H or D, are those only for rush hour?

Thanks, Elizabeth

Not many bus lines go all the way down to The Mall. And directly from Adams Morgan, probably nothing all the way. But they will get you a lot closer.

The letters are just another way of identifying the various routes. Even numbers, even with a letter, are regular routes. Rush hour only buses are mostly odd numbers. You should probably concentrate on the 40, 42 and L2 buses, as I think those are the closest to your location and heading south towards The Mall.

No, those are not only for rush hour. There are no buses that go to the mall from Adams Morgan, but there are some that get you close:

42 bus will take you to Dupont Circle metro on the red line, or all the way down to Gallery Place/Chinatown. Still a good 15 min walk to the mall, but perfect for Portrait Gallery.

S2, S4, S9 all go down 16th st to 9th and F st NW (or right near there) - that's the Gallery Place/Chinatown neighborhood again.

You can take the red bus - Circulator, stops at Ontario and Columbia rd - if you go North, it will take you to Woodley Park metro in 5 min for the red line, or if you go East - it will take you to the green/yellow line Columbia Heights metro.

There's also H4, H8 buses - but those are east/west, not South/North buses - good if you want to visit the Immaculate Conception cathedral, but that's about it. Here's info about the cathedral, one of the largest churches in the world. But I digress...

Perhaps you could tell us which actual street you are on. Are you hard against the east side of the Park? Did you know that there is a Circulator bus that goes along Calvert St. from 18th and Adams Mill Road right to the Woodley Park Station, as well as the the 96 and L2 buses? And that the 90 and 92 buses come within 1/6 mile of that station at the east end of the Calvert St (Duke Ellington) Bridge?

Anyway, the 42 goes downtown to 9th and F every 10-12 minutes. Get it on Columbia Road just west of 18th St.

To walk to 16th for the S2 and other (assuming you are right at the east end of the Zoo) is a long walk.

The L2 ends at 17 and K, the 90, 92, 96 go towards NE and SE DC, not the Mall, but the 42 is the best if you want a bus only ride. 9th and F is 1/3 mile from the National History Museum and the National Gallery of Art.

If you are close to 16 St, you can either take the S2 bus to near the Mall, or walk one more block east to 14thSt and get the Green Line, but not if you are in the western section of Adams-Morgan: it's too far.

If you want to check the bus lines mentioned by all of us, type, for example "42 bus dc" in Google and get the PDF timetable for that bus. The biggies, again, are DC Circulator (Woodley Park route), S2, L2, 42 (this last being the easiest and most frequent). The 42 and L2 and S2 also go right near the White House.

If you have an iPhone install Metro Bus and Next Circulator. They are both great!
