Best area to stay & play in Washington DC?

Hey guys, there is a group of 4 of us visiting Washington DC in October on a Friday/Saturday night. We have Capitals tickets for the Saturday and are heading to Baltimore on the Sunday for a Ravens game. Just wondering what the best area is to stay in to take in some good nightlife/bars/live music. We are all in our mid-late 20's. Also feel free to throw out any other "musts" when visiting America's capital. Thanks a lot!

The liveliest area that also has some hotels is the Penn Quarter. And that is where the Verizon Center is located, so an easy walk to your hockey game. There is some nightlife there too.

Penn Quarter does have nightlife - but it is pretty much all tourists all the time. Locals - particularly 20's - go out to U St. or Columbia Heights (11th st. between Kenyon & Park Rd. - particularly Wonderland & Meridian Pint.) and the newest hot spots along 14th st. between P & U st. H st. is also popular - take a cab. And Adams Morgan can still be fun for youngsters, in that tawdry boisterous, jumbo slice at 3 a.m. kind of way (watch where you step!) Check out local blog DCist.com.

I agree with Victoria, you can still stay in Penn quarter, but definitely go to either 14th and U st Nw or 14th and P st Nw for going out. A cab will be around $10-12 to penn quarter, or there's u st metro stop on yellow/green line. Penn quarter has lots of nice expensive restaurants, some shishi clubs, but for local hopping scene that will offer a variety of choices on top of each other - 14th st for sure.
