Cost of SmarTrip Card to drop to $2

I am hearing that the cost of a SmarTrip card will drop to $2 on October 1, 2013. You will still pay $10 at the vending machine or at CVS, but the value on the card will be $8 instead of the current $5. wmata.com/about_metro/…

So if you are planning to visit Washington, DC after October 1, you might want to hold off buying your SmarTrip cards.

Metro website doesn't say anything about the new price - where did you hear about it?

The link in my original post is to the press release from WMATA about the new price. Here it is again: wmata.com/about_metro/…

I was told the higher price during tourist season was to gouge the visitors

"I was told the higher price during tourist season was to gouge the visitors"

You were lied to. The price has been the same, summer and winner, since they started offering the SmarTrip cards.

The price of a SmarTrip card has been $5 since they introduced them many years ago. This is the first time they have ever lowered the price. Why they picked this October 1 to do that is not something I know. It may have something to do with their fiscal year. It may just be arbitrary. But it will not go up again when the tourist hordes arrive next spring.

The press release says ".... riders will be able purchase a SmarTrip card for $2 at any Metro Sales Office or commuter store." Doesn't mention whether (or not) us out-of-towners will be able to buy them online, as is currently the case. Anybody know?
