New Year's Eve with older kids in DC

Hi I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what we can do on NYE with our daughters. Ages 12 & 14 to celebrate the new year. We are visiting from Miami, the event in Alexandria seems as if it's for younger kids.

There is not a lot going on in DC for families. You could look at the Kennedy Center or other theaters and see what is playing or if it is cold you could ice skate at the sculpture gardens. Alexandria I believe has the only fireworks.

My impression of Alexandria's First Night was that there were performances to appeal to most age groups, including adults. Go to the link and keep scrolling and scrolling. Lots of music that cannot possibly be for young children. www.firstnightalexandria.org/events/schedule

Accept that unless you're hanging out with close friends or family - or are 22 and want to dance blotto in the street (which is not a bad thing at that age) New Year's Eve is a ridiculous artificial holiday that basically sucks for anyone, any time, any where.

If you have a car with you, First Night Annapolis might be interesting for them. If they were older, the Maryland Live Casino at Arundel Mills has a Times Square simulcast with prizes. The Smithsonian facilities will all be open New Years Day, so you may want to head to bed at your normal time on the 31st and beat the crowds into the museums and the National Zoo.

My husband and I go to First Night Alexandria regularly, and it's been a few years since we were kids. I particularly recommend the concerts by Bill Kirchen & Too Much Fun and the Grandsons for young adults the age of your children. The Janine Wilson Band is really good too. All great local bands.
