April trip from Boston- Need suggestions for an ocean stop

Looking to do an April Road trip with our 2 kids ( 13,11) to see a few sights in DC ( thinking maybe 1-2 nights)... Would like to then spend a few nights in a beach community, and we're looking for suggestions!

I realize that April is not "beach weather" per say, but being from Boston, I also know that the East Coast weather can be rather unpredictable. Looking for someplace to maybe rent a condo or a house with water/ ocean views.

What are our options? Maryland? Delaware? Jersey? Are the beaches of Virgina far from DC?

Any/ All suggestions welcome!!

Well, let's put it in terms of how much of a detour you're willing to handle.

The ocean is about 3-4 hours from DC. It's either 3 hours to DE/MD or 4 or so to Va. Beach. You'd likely then just triangulate back to boston. You may have an easier time in NJ if you don't want that kind of trip. You could then use the Cape May ferry to get from DE to NJ.

However, there are a number of Chesapeake bay communties that are all closer to DC. Chesapeake Beach or kent island notably.

I'd say Ocean City Md. - rates should be low for April, and there will be more open than some of the quieter beaches. You would also be close to Assateague Island National seashore with wild ponies & park activities.

1. A short jog is the Annapolis, MD area (there or possibly Easton-St. Michael's, MD) after DC. It is only about 1 hour away, on the water, historic, picturesque, and offers steamed crabs galore. You would then also be in the very general direction of your way home.

In a somewhat different (and longer) order, you might consider doing the beach before DC. If so, you might minimize extra driving that would involved from DC and then back in visiting Virginia (and the ponies). It depends in large measure on the time you have available as well as the scenery and lodging.. If so:

2. Taking a ferry from Connecticut to the North Shore of Long Island and the Hamptons, then driving to NYC. It will be brisk, but you will never get better rates at the Hamptons. (However, you may wish to drive around NYC entirely.)

3. Along the lines of Canaan's suggestion. down the New Jersey Coast to Cape May, NY (lovely Victorian homes at the water), across at the Lewes, DE ferry (stopping in Cape May , NJ, Rehoboth-Bethany, DE, and/or Ocean City, MD. then to DC,

If you want to do the beach after DC, the directions on the above items could be reserved coming from, rather than going to, DC.

You have fine suggestions in earlier posts on destinations such as VA.
