baseball in April.. staying in Alexandria, VA a good idea?

We are going to see Nationals vs Cardinals baseball in April. We're thinking of staying in Alexandria, Va. Does the metro go close to the ballpark? Also, how long would the ride be there? If anyone has a moderately price hotel to recommend, it would be appreciated! Thanks

A map will show you where the Metro goes and how long it takes. www.wmata.com

Everyone's definition of moderately priced is going to be different, so we don't know what yours is. If you post your price range, you may get more replies.

If you're staying in Alexandria and want to be near a Metro station, you're looking at something near the King Street or Van Dorn stations. King Street is better. While there a couple of good chain motels near Van Dorn, there isn't much of anything else. The King Street station is close to Old Town Alexandria, with a great selection of restaurants.

Metro's Navy Yard station is about a block from the ballpark.

My husband and I will be at one of the Nats-Cardinals games in April. Should be a good series.

Thanks for the advice! I booked a room at the Hampton Inn Old Town area South, since it has a free shuttle to the Metro and to the Old Town area. Looking forward to the ballgames, on Thurs, Fri. & Saturday. We're Cardinal fans, but the Nationals are my next favorite team. Win-Win!

Many hotels with an Alexandria address are not in convenient locations. If possible, you do not want to be dependent on a hotel shuttle to get you to and from a Metro station. No matter where you stay in Alexandria, you will have to change trains in order to get to Nationals Park. It could take up to 45 minutes, depending on where you are staying and what time of day you are riding. Changing trains always adds time. It could take as little as 20 minutes if things go well and you are leaving from King Street, not Van Dorn.

That Hampton Inn is not in Old Town and is surrounded by highways and gas stations. No place to eat unless you have your own transportation. Good for travelers getting off the Interstate. Not so great for a tourist concentrating on DC.

I agree with Darrel -- that Hampton Inn is not in a great location. The one that is actually in Old Town (on King Street) is much more convenient.

Another option is to travel by Boat!

Yes, it is more expensive than taking metro but it should be a pretty unique experience.
