Do you recommend Alexandria

Hiya...off to DC in a month and getting v nervous as have never been and know little about it. If we book the Big Bus tour is it very complicated with all the loops. Also as the title says is Alexandria worth a visit and how would we get to it from hotel near Washington Post? If only we were going back to Florida it seems so easy x x

Wouldn't a completely easy life be rather boring? And, really, DC isn't all that complicated.

Unless you want to just ride around and get an idea of what and where Washington, DC is all about, any of those hop-on hop-off buses are not a great use of money and time. As a means of transportation, they are poor. Too much time wasted waiting for the next bus with empty seats to show up. Use taxis, Metro and your feet and you will likely save money.

Old Town Alexandria is a nice place with a lot of history, some nice shopping and some great restaurants. You can get there on Metro, getting off at the King Street station. Starting around noon there is a free shuttle that will carry you down to the waterfront. Or you can walk, as it is only about a mile of so, passing many interesting shops, etc. I would not put Alexandria high on a list of things to see, but it is still a treasure.

Very easy to get to Old Town Alexandria from where you're staying, just take the blue line to Franconia and get off at King Street. It is nice, lots of colonial era architecture and history. It's older than DC is. If you have an evening where you're stumped I'd just walk up and down King Street to the river and back.

Washington DC is about the easiest city in the world to be a tourist in. Seriously, you could land here from a time capsule from 16th century Mars and figure things out in a day. By Florida being easier, I guess you mean Disney World? We might not be easier than that, but at least we keep all our cartoon characters locked up in Congress.

Once you get here, you'll see how easy it is. The National Mall is very walkable and it is impossible to get lost there because it is very open and you can see the Washington Monument towering above you, acting as a constant reference point.

If you get tired of walking, there are cabs everywhere that you can hail in just a few seconds.

Also, millions of tourists, many of whom have never done public transportation before, ride our Metro system and figure it out just fine.

(I believe they still run a free shuttle from King Street Metro down King to the waterfront, where the shops and restaurants tend to be clustered. There are many restaurants in Old Town -- seafood, ethnic restaurants, Irish pubs -- and shopping, especially [still] small specialty shops, some have been there 30+ years.)
