Overnight Parking in DC

Hi,

We would like to find out about overnight parking options in DC. We arrive in May end and were wondering if there are any cheap overnight parking options. The hotel valet rates are very expensive and DO NOT make sense.

It would be really helpful for us if we could find cheaper options.

Location: Hyatt near Capitol Hill

Thanks

The Union Station parking garage is nearby and charges $22 a day. See http://www.unionstationdc.com

The hotel valet operations make sense in that overnight/allday parking is scarce and they use commercial garages that are not cheap. If the hotel offers free in and out, be aware most garages you go to on your own do not. Compare the time and hassle of using Union Station to the extra cost of paying the hotel...it differs depending on where you stay, what you plan to do, if you need the car at all during your stay, etc.

You could always park at the Economy Lot at Reagan National Airport. While it adds a half-hour at the beginning and end of your stay (assuming you don't touch the car), it's only about $10 per day. After you park, you take the shuttle bus to the airport, and walk 100 feet onto the Blue or Yellow Metro rail Line into DC.

If you are arriving anytime after Friday at 3 AM, and leaving before Tuesday at 11:59 PM, you can park in a Metro lot and pay just for exiting and not worry about their 24-hour limit policy. They can't tell that you have parked two overnights in a row, until Tuesday into Wednesday if you put the car in after the Thursday night "limit check". So you get 4 days for $5 or so. Just park in the Glenmont West Garage on Georgia Avenue 3 miles south of the ICC (MD 200 toll road) exit for Layhill Road south. You need to have a SmarTrip card if you are leaving the Garage on a weekday after 10 AM.

I assume you are coming from Massachusetts.

Are you sure you really need to bring a car? Exploring most places/tourist sites in DC is usually easier without one (walking/Metrobus/Metro train gets you most places and then taxis fill the gap). Parking in DC is typically an expensive hassle - like many people, I live downtown and don't own a car.

$48 a day valet parking with 24 in and out privileges is not too out-of-line in DC. You can always park at Union Station as suggested above for around $22 per 24 hours, smaller amounts for shorter period. But you won't have in and out privileges.

Wow, sounds like someone is touting some sort of "parking scheme?"
