Mount Vernon / Udvar-Hazy Center - same day?

Will be staying in Arlington in Aug and have Fri and Sat available for site-seeing with 12 year old grandson. Hoped to drive to Mount Vernon Friday Morning, spend about 4 hours there, then drive to the Udvar-Hazy Center. For Sat we would get timed tickets for the Washington Monument and visit some of the Smithsonian Museums. Given traffic and crowd conditions that time of year should we switch days for the activities? Also are we being too ambitious planning Mount Vernon and the Udvar-Hazy Center on the same day?

Note: the two locations aren't exactly close. Mt. Vernon and Udvar-Hazy are actually 30 miles apart. But the road between them shouldn't be too bad. But the trip up there will be long.

If you find yourself really enjoying Mt. Vernon and it's getting later in the day then you might want to be willing to skip Udvar-Hazy. Then again, if your grandson is more enthused about planes/rockets than US history then maybe focus on Udvar Hazy first and then get a fill of history from Old Town Alexandria which has a lot of preserved colonial architecture and some more minor sites/tours.

It's going to be busy at all those locations each day, you might not notice the difference if you switch at all.

Check this schedule: Every single day in August, the Udvar-Hazy Museum is open until 6:30 PM...

It's a 45-minute drive between the two places on the Fairfax County Parkway (which has traffic lights; it's not a freeway). But considering that it's a 30-mile trip, 45 minutes is not bad.

Spending one day doing those two Virginia-based activities and another on the Mall is a great idea, particularly if you are very interested in both Mt. Vernon and the Udvar-Hazy Center. However, I would suggest that you consider switching your days. Rush hour traffic in Virginia can be bad and it starts earlier on Fridays than other weekdays. You will probably have a much better drive between the two attractions if you are driving on a weekend.

As for being able to do both in the same day, it is certainly feasible if you keep track of your time and plan your visit. Checking the extended hours calendar, as NorthofDC suggested, is also a great idea. Currently, the Udvar-Hazy Center is not set to be open late on August 9, but is scheduled to be open until 6:30pm on the other days of the month. I would also revisit this calendar as these are subject to change.

Hope this helps!

I've been to Mt. Vernon numerous times, and it's not a place I would visit that would have a restrictive time element involved. But that's just me. The beauty of this place is the numerous acres of land this attraction has, and many of the various sites involve walking some distance. Of course, there is also a museum there, that is excellent, and if you really wanted to learn about what life was like when Washington lived there, it would take some time to read and see all the exhibits. The tour of his home is also very interesting. One of our favorite spots to hang out is on the front porch that has numerous rocking chairs. The views of the Potomac and the forests beyond are gorgeous and much of the scenery has not changed since the days that Washington resided there. Of course there are also special exhibits, boat tours, demonstrations, movies, a restaurant and a gift shop. Scattered throughout the property, you can also visit out buildings like the slaves quarters, greenhouse, blacksmith shop, salt house, servant's hall etc. etc.

If this is a place you won't easily revisit in the future, you may want to reconsider how much time you would really like to spend here.
