A Metro SmarTrip card for each of you, a decent map of downtown DC and a willingness to ask people on the street for a little help. The Marriott Gateway connects underground right to the Crystal City Metro station.

I recommend that you not travel on Metro during rush hour (before 9:30 in the morning and between 4pm and 7 pm in the evenings). It can be really hectic then and folks are focused on getting to/from work, not on helping visitors who are lost or confused. At any other time of the day, you will find the locals very willing to help you navigate Metro or the city streets.

Also, take advantage of every park bench or museum seating area to rest. Bring water and snacks for yourself and your granddaughter. You may take these into any building (except the U.S. Capitol), but don't eat or drink except in cafes or outdoor areas.

After 7pm there should be some parking here and there in the area near the monuments and memorials. There may still be some rush hour traffic then, but it will mostly be going out of the city.

Or ask your hotel concierge to book tickets with one of the local tour companies - preferably one with hop-on/hop-off privileges if you want to explore any of the memorials or museums. That way you can avoid a lot of walking and get a narrated tour to boot! (The guide will be invaluable if your 6-year-old incessantly asks, "What's that?" every minute or two, so tip appropriately!)

The DC aquarium is now close and merged its contents with the Aquarium in Baltimore.

It is Old Town Trolley, and it is a small bus made to look vaguely like a trolley. If all you want to do is ride and listen to the commentary, it is OK, though a bit expensive. As a means of transportation, it can be frustrating and a waste of time. www.trolleytours.com/washington-dc/…

There are better zoos in the world, but the National Zoo is pretty nice. And it has a baby panda! Easy to get there using Metro.
