Can you please give advice where to stay pre Washington DC?

We are arriving in Washington DC on the 16th of July witch is my daughters 13th birthday. We are driving from Miami Beach with several stops on our way- Orlando-Cape Canaveral, but because of hotel prices in DC we are not checking in at Park Hyatt before the 16th. So can anyone please give me some advice where to stay for a night or two before this? Not more than 3 hours’ drive, if pool or beach that would be nice. All advice is appreciated, first time driving on the east coast of US.

If you want some historic tourist things, Williamsburg would be great. Good for at least a two day stay.

Williamsburg is a great suggestion. Really good historical context for a bunch of the stuff you'll eventually see in DC. Plus you're relatively close to some beaches (there is a beach at the York River which is Salt water and wide). There are also the twin theme parks of Busch Gardens and Water Country USA.

If you'd rather not stray from I-95 too far then either Richmond (2 hours from DC) or Fredericksburg (1 hour from DC) are also good options. Richmond is the capital of Virginia and is a sizeable city. It has a lot of history from the Civil War but a number of other attractions. Fredericksburg is smaller but has a well preserved downtown as well.

There is a theme park (rollercoasters and what not) called King's Dominion that is between those two towns as well. You could stay there and have fun as well, they have a sizeable waterpark section as well. It will not be that crowded on a weekday.

Great suggestions but want to say that by the time you pay for Williamsburg or amusement park tickets, not sure you saved any money over DC hotels. Maybe come up Skyline Dr and visit Harpers Ferry. kayak or tube on the Potomac.
