Weekend to remember.

My question is simple. Me and my family will be in D.C. from 6/20 until 6/23. Meaning we have two days to see as much as we can, and we have not traveled to D.C. before. We need information on everything (except hotel), what are the must see's, and the best/most memorable restaurants to eat at. we were thinking on getting tour bus tickets to help with the commute. also please keep in mind we have two younger children going on the trip with us so they can't be bored to death (so no art museums or super long tours lol). Any information that you have will be a huge help.

P.S. we are staying at a hotel in Tyson's corner.

Thanks, Bryce from Charlotte, NC

To start with, you will spend too much time commuting from Tysons Corner, one of the most traffic-clogged areas around DC. At least you won't have weekday commuters to deal with.

Take a look around this forum for lots of info about what there is to do. And museums are one of the reasons people come to DC, since the Smithsonian museums are some of the best in the world. And they are all free.

Assuming you are driving from North Carolina and staying at Tyson's Corner, you may just want to drive into D.C. for your sightseeing days. Plan to park in a parking garage on Saturday but street parking is free on Sunday. (Read all the parking signs carefully. Even though street parking is free on Sundays, there are some places where parking is not permitted at any time.) Two garages with lots of parking spaces and reasonable rates are at Union Station and the Ronald Reagan Building. Other parking garages can be found online at Best Parking DC.

If the "tour bus tickets" you are planning to buy are for a hop on/hop off bus (or trolley), then you may want to reconsider. They are an expensive way to get around the city and once you get off, you risk a long wait for another bus to come with available seating. (Thus, you waste a lot of sightseeing time.) They are OK for people with mobility issues and/or for people who just want to ride around and see the sights from the bus. But, it would probably be better for you just to use your feet, Metro and taxis to get around to the various sights.
