Help with itinerary and hotel

We are a family of 5 (2 parents, 3 kids aged 15, 12 and 9)

We plan to be in DC for 2 days (or maybe 3) in August.

Can you suggest an itinerary? What should we be sure not to miss. Are two days enough? What will the kids especially appreciate?

Also - can you reccomend a hotel? We would need somewhere with parking and access to public transportation, or else a reccommendation on where to park near the main attractions.

Thanks so much

First of all, we can't adequately recommend a hotel without first knowing your budget. Also, since you have a car you will need to factor in daily parking at the hotel which can be as high as $40 per day. There are a handful of budget hotels in Arlington which do not charge for parking and which are near Metro stations--the Americana, the Best Western Iwo Jima and the Holiday Inn Rosslyn@Key Bridge.

Two days is a bit short for a D.C. visit, but if that is all you have then I would focus on visiting the various Smithsonian Museums and walking around the monuments (which is an enjoyable activity after dark when they are all lit up). You might want to check out the following site for information on visiting the Smithsonians with kids: www.si.edu/kids

The Sofitel worked really well for us. Great location and beautiful rooms. :).

If you want a reasonably priced stay, we stayed in Arlington, VA at the Residence Inn Capitol View. It had parking on site; shuttle to metro, nice view of river, breakfast included in morning, washer/dryer on site if you need to do laundry, walkable to shopping and restaurants. Just mentioning if you are looking for a budget friendly place with good service. We stayed there as we had relatives living a block away but went into Washington DC frequently during our stay,.

In terms of Washington DC, the key things to see are the important government buildings like the White House, Capitol, Washington Memorial, Jefferson Memorial - you can do it yourself or go on a tour..

but a lot of your time should be spent exploring the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. I found the Crune museum also quite interesting.

Choose the museums to see on what your kids might be interested in.....
