48 hours in Dc - advice??

Hi all

Will be spending 13-15 September in dc. Staying at Washington hilton. Never been to dc before.

Arriving at 1pm on the Saturday at Dulles airport. Thinking of doing Segway tour on the Saturday night (2.5 hour sites by Segway). Do you think this will be sufficient that doing a bus tour on the Sunday would be overkill? Planning on visiting farmers market and Holocaust museum Sunday and also a visit to outside the White House if it's not included in Segway tour. Any other must sees I can squeeze in before departing lunchtime on the Monday? All advice appreciated.

If you read this forum you would see that we don't recommend a paid bus tour for most visitors. An unnecessary expense. It is cheaper to do it yourself on your own schedule using Metro, your feet and maybe a taxi ride or two.

The Segway tour should be sufficient for an overview of the city and it should include a stop outside the White House. (Our Segway tour, which was both fun and informative, had a photo op stop in front of the W.H.) There is no need to take any other tours after you have done this one.

If the Segway tour does not go around the memorials at the Tidal Basin (which ours did not), you could walk over there on Sunday evening to see them.

Depending on your interests, the time you spend at the farmers market and the Holocaust Museum and the time you have to leave for the airport on Monday, you could include a visit to one of the Smithsonian museums or one of the art galleries. All of them are free, so you can always pop in for a short time to just see an exhibit or two that interests you. Check the websites for the Smithsonian Institution (www.si.edu) or the National Gallery of Art (www.nga.gov) to see what's on exhibit during your visit.

What about the Washington Monument? It's open now and you might still be able to get a ticket on-line, or at least make a reservation.
