Amtrak At Union Station to Dulles Airport

I'll be arriving in DC via Amtrack and I need to get to a hotel at the airport for a flight out the next morning.

How far is it from Union Station to a hotel at Dulles? What would be the approximate cost of a taxi? The Metro is not an option as I will be having large luggages.

Thanks.

Depending on where the hotel is at Dulles, it's about 30 miles, give or take a couple.

A taxi would probably run you $50-$60 depending on traffic, not including tip.

Thanks, Irishfan.

Considering the distance between Union Station to the airport, would it be a better choice to stay at a hotel close to Union Station and then proceed to the airport the next morning?

And could you name a few hotels that are at the airport that are only 10-15 minutes away from Dulles?

Thanks.

There are lots of decent hotels that are very near Dulles--in fact they're mere minutes away. In Sterling--Country Inn and Suites, Fairfield Inn, Hampton Inn-Washington-Dulles Airport, Homestead Studio Suites Hotel-Washington DC-Sterling, Towneplace Suites by Marriott Sterling. And very close to the airport but in Herndon--Hyatt Dulles. These are all hotels that are very close to Dulles. Of course there are others that are a bit further away. If you want more info, please post back. Also, most (if not all of these hotels) offer free local shuttle service. If you decide to stay at one of them, I would double check and ask if they do still offer a shuttle to the airport.

As for staying near Union Station--it's up to you. Most hotels in DC will be able to help you get a taxi.

You should also consider what time of day you'll be hitting the road - if you're trying to leave DC during rush hour, the traffic may add another 30 minutes worth of cab fare to the meter!

Depends on what time your flight from Dulles departs. If you have plenty of time in the morning to get out to Dulles, I'd go with a hotel in Washington simply because it's likely to be more interesting than the area around Dulles, and you won't be captive to the hotel dining choices there. You might also fit in a bit of sightseeing if you haven't been to DC before. This would be ideal if you can wait to depart for Dulles until after morning rush hour.

Of course, if your flight is at 7:00 or 8:00 in the morning you'd be better off staying out near the airport.

SuperShuttle's shared van service will take you from Union Station to Dulles for $26; they also do pick-ups at DC hotels:

Odds are an airport hotel will be less expensive than comparable accommodations in DC itself, but DC hotel rates fluctuate wildly, even within the same week. So check quikbook.com (a reservations service), TravelZoo.com (a clearinghouse for special promotional deals) and sidestep.com -- a mega-search engine for travelers -- to do some comparison pricing.
