Hazelton/ Coopers Rock area

We are staying in Hazelton in July, for 1 week. Looking for suggestions for biketrails, hiking (with 7 year old), wildlife watching, fishing. We've looked into rafting at Ohiopyle SP in PA.. how long of a drive would that be? Should we go to Swallow Falls, or Deepwater? Any great out of the ay places in that area? How long to Morgantown? Thanks

20-30 minutes to Morgantown from there. Easy drive on the interstate. They have nice bike trails (Rail to Trail). You should be able to find them on the internet. Can't really help you with the other questions.

North Bend Rail Trail is 72 mile trail from Parkersburg to Clarksburg. Old B&O rail bed with 13 tunnels. Doesn't connect to Morgantown.

Here is a web site dedicated to outside sports and activities. Three bike shops in Morgantown. Contact them for bike trail info. Trail or park that comes to mind is Deckers Creek.

If you research iPlayOutside you'll see there is hardly a weekend that there isn't a bike race or run in Morgantown area.

24 miles to Ohiopyle from Hazelton. Ohiopyle is pretty awesome.

Day places would include Blackwater Falls in WV, Coopers Rock,.. last time I was through Bruceton Mills they had a "soda" machine especially for fishing worms.

Never been to Swallow Falls or Deepwater to say.

Railtrail exists from Hendricks to Elkins WV also. It's about 64 miles from Hazelton. I would jump on the trail in Parsons near the Experimental Forest

Check http://wvparks.com/ website for other neat ideas. Hope that helps!

I am not familiar with Deepwater. Do you possibly mean Deep Creek? goto http://www.deepcreeklake.com/ It is right beside Wisp Ski Resort http://www.skiwisp.com/index.htm

It is a very pretty area -- we just drive through it so not sure what all there is to do.

Canaan Valley is tons of hiking, etc fun. (Blackwater Falls was mentioned - it is in Canaan Valley). http://www.canaanvalley.org/

If you go, also check out the windmills. You can park beside them. Also, stop in the Purple Fiddle for ice cream.

To Canaan: At Morgantown, take I-68 W to Friendsville, MD. Follow it to where it intersects with Rt. 42 S at Friendsville, MD. Follow Rt. 219 S though Oakland, MD to Thomas, WV. At Thomas, WV pick up Rt. 32 S into Canaan Valley.

Hazelton is about half an hour from Morgantown. From Hazelton, Canaan will be about 1 and a half hours. The last 30-45 minutes will be on a country road. Canaan is a wildlife jewel - no 4 lanes to reach it. But tons of people from DC and other areas are building second homes like crazy in the Valley so it is not impossible to reach.

Coopers Rock in Bruceton Mills will be closer to you (15 miles I think). I've never been there so can't tell you about it. http://www.coopersrockstateforest.com/

Cheat Lake is in Morgantown but I don't know how fun it is. http://www.cheatlake.com/

Yes, I think I meant Deep Creek.. This all sounds so beautiful... maybe we should pick up a Real Estate book while there?

I'm a little curious how you picked Hazelton. You can get to a lot of things from there but there isn't much close by.

You've heard about Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls. If you get to Canaan, you can also get to Dolly Sods. Great Place for hiking. Probably better in the fall, though.

If you haven't found links to bike trails, let me know.

If you want to see pictures of some of these places, look at

www.AlandSueJohnson.com

Look under Almost Heaven, WV on the first page. There's pictures of Blackwater Falls and Dolly Sods. Several other places too but some of them are probably too far away.

AKJ,

Awesome website.

Also, I too wondered how in the world they picked Hazelton. I had never heard of it before.

I was curious when I first responded. There's a new Federal Prison out there but little else. We stay on the other side of the road from Coopers Rock at a campground when we go back for football games. We like to have a campfire at night and that's hard in a motel room.
