Daytrips within 50-75 miles of Sparta

I'll be staying in Sparta the first week of October while my bf is at Ft. McCoy. Since he'll be busy during the day, I'd like to explore the area and am looking for suggestions within an hour or two of Sparta. Since I'll be alone, I'm not really looking to go hiking, but any other suggestions would be appreciated.

The fall colors should be starting by then, but probably better as you go north from Sparta. You could drive along the Mississippi River north or south of La Crosse.

Madison may be a little out of your range, but it is a city of about 200,000, the state capitol and home to the University of Wisconsin, so possibilities there are endless.

The Wisconsin Dells is a big summer tourist area. There is a casino at the Dells and there would still be some tourist attractions open, although most may be closed.

There is also a casino at Black River Falls.

Spring Green is an interesting area too.

Hope this gets you started.

Chippewa Falls is a nice little town, just NE of Eau Claire. You can tour the Leininkugel Brewery there. Eau Claire has some nice shopping areas, too. Have a fun visit!

If you like to ride a bicycle, there is a great bike trail from Elroy to Sparta that goes through 3 old train tunnels. There are places along the trail that rent bikes.

Just a suggestion.

You could head to LaCrosse/Onalaska on the Mississippi. There is shopping just off highway I90 in Onalaska (chain stores...Borders etc.) If you head up the river on hwy 35 you'll go through some beautiful scenery and cute towns with little gift shops/galleries. The further north you go the prettier it gets. I especially like Fountain City...cute but small. I'm sure you could cross the river somewhere and come back on the MN side.

If you go on the Elroy/Sparta bike trail be sure to stop at Pies Are Square in Wilton. Excellent pizza and pie.

If you take 27 South to Cashton, and then take 33 East to Ontario you will drive through Amish country. You will see many of them in buggies and many hand made signs listing the products they make to sell out of their homes. You drive right up to their house and they usually have the items for sale right there on their property. Be sure to hit the bakery! Once you are in Ontario there is great canoeing on the kickapoo river.

Madison is probably a good 2 hour drive but a great place to spend the day. Be sure to go to State street off the capital if you go.

Baraboo is another cute town with a lot of stores and a pretty drive. That is just South of Wisconsin Dells off of Hwy 12.

Have a great time!

Do you like to antique? There is a large antique mall in Columbus, WI.

Thanks for the ideas. I definitely like the idea of driving up by the river and going through Amish country. I'll keep checking back to see what other great ideas appear!

Some people were giving you places to look that were much farther than 75 miles. If you are willing to drive 90 minutes from Sparta, you have the following options:

-Wisconsin Dells. There are literally 1,000 things to do there. Look up www.dells.com

-There are a bunch of neat little towns with history in your driving range. You are traveling at a good time because you might catch some of the fall colors. I like downtown Viroqua. Hillsboro is the Czech capitol of Wisconsin. Hillsboro has Amish shops, and you can get Amish goods at the farmer's market that is run on Saturdays. (Not sure if the farmers market will still be in operation by the time you go.) North Freedom has a railroad museum and rail rides. Baraboo has Circus World Museum. Spring Green is about 2 hours from Sparta, but there is plenty to do there if you are into artsy stuff.

-The LaCrosse area. I love LaCrosse. It's one of my favorite cities in Wisconsin. I really can't explain it. It's probably great memories from visiting friends at UW-LaCrosse when I was at a different college.

-As mentioned earlier, the Amish country in the Westby/Cashton area. Whoever mentioned the bike ride gave a great idea.

-If you want to do some shopping and are looking for a mall, there is a nice one in LaCrosse. You can also reach Rochester, MN and Eau Claire in about 90 minutes from Sparta as well.

Are you willing to list some of your interests so we can direct you a little better?
